Understanding & Preventing Puppy (Dog) Reactivity Problems | Part Four
This month Uncle Stonnie is going to share his thoughts on understanding, preventing and/or addressing reactivity in puppies and adult dogs. Puppy, or adult dog, reactivity problems are a common topic on social media and we feel that the subject is made unnecessarily complex in order to boost content consumption. Our approach is very simple and in this fourth video we demonstrate how basic obedience leads to increased freedom and socialization opportunities.
In this video we feature three Labrador Retrievers, a Malinois, a Goldendoodle, and a Bernedoodle. We start off by talking about helping dogs overcome fear, then we go out into our pre adventure area to do some trail maintenance, then...

    We had a black lab for 14 years. He was a gentle giant of 130 lbs. Didn’t have skin issues, but did have ear issues. He’s been gone now for 3 years. Was the best dog ever. We ( my daughter ) now has 2 husky’s. Beautiful, but not Labs for sure. Still love them to pieces. I absolutely love your channel. I would love to see you do some work with huskies given that’s the breed we now have.

    How would you feel if every time you did something wrong (and you didn’t know the right action to take) you got buzzed by a collar around your neck? No pain, or maybe a little pain- a buzz. Then maybe someone yelled the right thing to do at you and you got buzzed again. Think about it. Maybe you were so far away that you couldn’t hear the right command, so you got buzzed. And you knew that meant come back. I can see if it is meant for one action only- come back. But otherwise too confusing and a cause of neurosis.

    👉🏻👉🏻👉🏻 Important question…..I just got a bernedoodle puppy(yes, I know how everyone feels about doodles, lol) Tuck is very sweet, smart and watchful of me and biddable. He very much wants to please at 10 weeks old. As soon as he is fully vax’d in about 2 weeks, I will be taking him on walks in woods/forests on a 30 foot lead. I don’t have anywhere yet to let him be loose, nor am I comfortable with it on public lands. My question is about chewing sticks (and basically mouthing every plant lol) I had a traumatic experience with my lab years ago who choked on a 3-4 inch piece and was becoming lethargic while I was on phone with emergency vet. He finally got it out, but it totally traumatized me to the point I’m extremely fearful of Tuck chewing or even carrying a stick. My stomach literally drops every time he grabs one. Please tell me some truths about dogs and sticks to alleviate my fears! Thank you and I love your channel!

    OMG, you are the first trainer on RUclips to confirm what I have been saying about reactive dogs and especially my previous neighbours dog. Yes, they did move because they ended hating all their neighbours who complained about incessant barking and their dog becoming a liability over time. They got this sweet German Shepherd whom I hey thought would be a great guard dog... People think GS dogs are confident, when what I see is most of them are skittish and learn to show aggression to ward off whatever they perceive as a threat. I felt really sorry for this dog, he was left for 8 hours at a time alone outside, in a large cage in the front yard... We are on a road in the woods, it's full of scary sounds and critters, coyotes, bears, etc. Yeah, they were insistent that he was happier outside then stuck inside alone... he became a liability within a year. They took to several trainers who had dubious training approaches: I mean come on, shaking a bottle ful of coins in the dog's face to intimidate him into obedience... I tried to very diplomatically to explain to them that they should build their dog's confidence and trust instead... But I suppose by then they had so many people giving them advice and ideas and opinions, I had very little impact on them. I think it's so sad that certain dogs have such potential to become fantastic, sweet dogs are turned into dangerous animals. I look forward to seeing how your training changes this cute Malinois.

So I brought him to a great trainer. Now yes he listens to treats but if he misbehaves just to get a treat I raise my voice stand in front off him and he stops. I don’t know it works for me. My Mom was driving down a dirt road in Mississippi. She caught something on the side of the road peeking up real quick in the mirror. She backed up and found two hairless scabby puppies in the tall grass. She of course scooped them up turned around and went straight to the vet. Mange, dehydration, and way to skinny, but were otherwise healthy. So Dixie and Chick went home with my Mom. When the hair finally grew back after the mange treatment and the vet got a good look at them she found out they were Catahoula Leopard Dogs. Independent is an understatement. She lived out on the backside of nowhere next to her bosses saw mill, which was about a mile away. He was a politician also and my Mom ran his campaign. There territory also covered the saw mill where they spent most of the day until they heard my mom whoop for them when she came home from work. They were awesome even tempered girls, but God help you if you messed with anyone at the saw mill and especially my Mom. Sidenote, my mom had them both spayed as puppies so I really believe that makes a tremendous difference in the temperment issues of most dogs. That and socialization and being their pack leader.

    I have a male irish Wolfhound the size of Taji, and this absolutely happens with random other dogs. My dog is friendly and has never started a fight, but he's had to finish quite a few. And mostly without a scratch on the other dog, but pretty scary for them. But it makes me sad, because he loves other dogs and wants to play, not fight. Maybe he's overly confident and ignores signals? Mainly I've been able to figure for the reason is that it is a combination of him being intact, and huge. Maybe it is that, that dogs identify him as a threat based purely on size, the "what if he goes all Kujo" scenario. I do find the dogs that seem to hate him the most on their own ideas are herding dogs or huskies, and the ones that hate him based on their owner's reaction are male German Shepherds. Oh yeah, and every dog thats attacked him has also been male.

    I wanted a chocolate that was going to be a energetic hunter. So….I searched and found a pup who was the daughter of the only ever National Champion in field trials (Storms Riptide Star or Rascal) my dogs dad and the only ever Nat Champ still to this day who was chocolate in color and who’s mom was also from a long line of champion field trial dogs. As a result my pups lineage has a total of 32 champs and 4 in the hall of fame. Needless to say she’s birdy and has great drive long legs and snout excellent for retrieves in grass and water. So I don’t subscribe necessarily to the color of the dog equaling specific traits as many believe. Just like the original breeding of the lab it can be hedged by looking at the parents lineage. But I understand what you are telling the average person looking for a non hunting companion. Great vids too

    It really depends on breeding. A lot of doodle breeders only breed F1 mixes where it's largely luck which breed characteristics get passed down. But those doing coat and genetic testing (and of course otho testing) breeding multigen doodles can culltivate a temperament more akin to the labrador or retriever ancestor with the furnishing and shed genes of the poodle.

    I stumbled onto these videos and I realized he makes WAY more sense than most dog trainers. I often watched other trainers and they make it seem like the dog learns how to behave in just one session and they are perfect thereafter. That doesn’t happen. Treats just make my dogs look more for what’s in my hand than what I am saying and I would never use e-collars. The only thing that works is exercise,enjoyment, and constant practice. I love seeing a trainer who,shows us the real way to train a dog.

    I wonder if all of the recent dog attacks could be due to an undiscovered side effect of a tick bite because just like rabies causes aggression maybe this is something we have not yet completely seen with the the long term effects. Just like steroid use.

    Hi Stonnie, I always love your videos, watch them often and always agree with you. This morning I got a peculiar argument at work: First let me explain. My husband and I want to try for a baby; however, we are also on a waiting list for a litter, chances of this litter being big (more than 6 pups) are of course smaller than 4, but if all goes according to plan we can invite a pup into our home at the beginning of January. We have been waiting for this litter for a little over 2 years. The first litter attempts failed. But the owners are very well experienced, and we have a superb feeling about them: their pups are already trained in many obstacles in their first 8 weeks. Therefore, we happily wait. As I mentioned in the beginning, we want to start a family and try for a baby. If all goes according to this plan I will be with child in August and give birth in May, meaning that the pup will be 5 months old. Again, if all goes well, many women are not pregnant straight away. Many colleagues argued this morning about having a baby and a pup at the same time. My husband and I are both experienced with dogs, gun dogs in particular (we plan to do a gun dog training with this pup) and again both experienced in training a puppy. We are both well aware that the puberty stage of a dog is just a stage and depends on having patience and willingness to train the dog. Colleagues at work said that I should either give up the puppy or give up having a baby, since having both at the same time will affect the dog in its training and yield a misbehaved dog. Peculiar to me is that first, they don't know about my experience with dogs. Then second: the dog in my eyes is not what I am afraid of, having a baby is new to me, not the dog. Since these are my colleagues who, by the way don't own a dog but do have children, I was wondering what the advice would be by a professional dog trainer like you. What would you advise for having a baby and a 5-month-old pup? With kind regards

    A trainer once told me saying no to a dog is like telling your car navigator where you don't want to go. Both work better if you tell them what you want from them instead of telling them what you don't want from them and letting them figure out the rest by themselves. I feel redirection works fine and I'm yet to encounter a situation where the no command would've been necessary instead of redirection. This is ofcource just an anecdote, one person and one dog. If you show me a study comparing a good number of dogs trained with no versus trained with redirection and the no group does better in certain situations I have no problem accepting that.

    • @StonnieDennis
      @StonnieDennis День назад

      I think the correct analogy would be that No is like brakes on a car; do you use your brakes? Be careful of trusting studies, as the number of studies designed, implemented, and interpreted, well is statistically insignificant.
